Business valuation: A key step in making important decisions

Determining the value of your company is a vital step when making important decisions such as employee participation, business transfers, share sales, inheritance, divorce, emigration, or the donation of shares to children, as well as the entry or exit of shareholders or partners. However, the costs of a professional business valuation can quickly add up when working with specialized firms. AXP Advisors offers an affordable alternative without compromising on quality or professionalism.

How is the value of your business determined?

A business can be valued in several ways. We use commonly accepted valuation methods that are widely applied in practice.

Enterprise DCF (discounted cash-flow)

This method determines a company’s value by estimating its future free cash flows and discounting them to their present value. It is particularly useful for valuing businesses or projects with reasonably predictable and stable cash flows.

Adjusted Present Value (APV)

APV is a variation of the Enterprise DCF method, best suited for companies with complex capital structures — especially in cases of acquisitions, restructurings, or when the ratio between equity and debt fluctuates significantly.

EBITDA-multiplier

This valuation technique offers a straightforward way to estimate a company’s value based on its EBITDA, multiplied by an industry-specific multiplier. It is particularly useful for investors who rely on sector benchmarks for a high-level valuation estimate.

When valuing your company or corporate structure, we select the method that best reflects the actual circumstances such as financing structure, level of uncertainty, and whether the company is a start-up or a mature business as well as the specific purpose of the valuation (for example, employee participation, sale, or emigration).

Every entrepreneur aims to create value through their business. But what does value creation really mean, and how do you achieve it?
